If you’re in the middle of a home improvement project like roofing in Alpharetta GA, or the surrounding area, your mind is probably full of different construction jargon. As you do a roof replacement or build a new house, you may be able to learn a bit about different kinds of structures. This type of information will also help you find a good contractor who can do work on the particular type of roof you have or want. Let ImproveIT! of Atlanta elaborate on the different kinds of roofs we work on.
Types of Roofs
You may think that a roof is a roof, but in the home building industry there are different names for different kind of roofing in Sandy Springs GA, and the surrounding areas. What follows are a few of the more common rooftop types:
- Built-Up: A flat or low-sloped roof that consists of many layers of both asphalt and ply sheets.
- Gable: This has two identical sloping planes on either side of the ridge. This is the most common type and it has gables, or the triangular point at the ridge of a sloping roof, on each side.
- Gambrel: A roof with two sloping planes of different pitch on either side of the ridge. Typically, the lower plane has a steeper slope than the upper plane, but both ends still have a gable.
- Hip: This one contains sloping planes of the same pitch on four different sides.
- Mansard: Another roof type with four different sides, but these planes have two different pitches. The lower plane is typically steeper than the upper. There are no gables.
- Shed: This roof has only one sloping plane. It therefore has no hips, ridges, gables or valleys.
