Common Causes of Rippling in Asphalt Roofs

To prevent damage and prolong the life of your asphalt roof, you should always keep an eye on any damage or issue with your shingles. One thing you should look out for is rippling.

If your asphalt shingles look wavy or rippled, there may be a hidden problem that should be addressed immediately. Here are some of the possible causes of rippling on asphalt shingles roofs and what you can do about them.

Poor Roof Ventilation

Condensation can form on the underside of your decking boards if the ventilation in your attic is limited or restricted. Moisture will seep through the material and eventually reach the shingles. As a result, the shingles may begin to ripple or buckle and the decking to warp. To prevent this from happening, make sure that your roofing system is properly ventilated.

Roof Leakage

Since water damage is not immediately noticeable, small leaks may go unnoticed for a long time. A thorough roof inspection is important so you can detect problems early and perform the necessary repairs before more extensive damage occurs. If left unaddressed, water could eventually leak into your home and cause the shingles to buckle and ripple due to the trapped moisture. It is necessary to fix the source of the leak as soon as possible so you can avoid roof replacement.

Re-Roofing Issues

Re-roofing is often done instead of a full tear-off to save money. But since the old roof is still there, there’s no way to know if the layers underneath it have problems that need to be fixed. At some point, the new roof will develop issues too, such as rippling.

Poor Craftmanship

Make sure to hire a trusted roofing company to guarantee the correct installation of your asphalt shingles. If the installation is not done properly, it can cause ripples on your shingles – affecting their performance and longevity. During installation, the underlayment should be stapled or nailed in the right way so that the shingles stay in place. The same goes for shingles – they should be nailed in the right places so that strong winds won’t easily blow them off.
