Questions to Ask a Roofer Before Hiring Them

When you’re choosing a residential roofing contractor, in a way, you’re looking for a partner in ensuring the quality and longevity of your roofing system. And a partner has to make you comfortable and earn your trust, so when you hire them to install your roof, you won’t regret your decision. You’ll sign up for their regular roof inspections and trust only them when it comes to repairing and, eventually, replacing your roof.

Given how long and important this relationship is, it’s not a good idea to put your trust in someone you are not completely comfortable with. To avoid this problem, ask your potential roofer these questions:

“How Long Have You Been Doing This?”

When it comes to roofing, more experience is definitely better. A roofing company that has been in the industry long (preferably under the same business name) means it doesn’t do poor quality work. They’re able to thrive because many people trust their expertise.

“What Type of Roof Do You Specialize In?”

Just because they’ve been offering roof repair and replacement for a long time doesn’t necessarily mean they know all types of roofing. Before hiring them, make sure the roofing contractor specializes in the type of roof you need.

“Are You Licensed to Work Here?”

Local roofers are typically always a better choice but ask them anyway if they’re licensed to work in your area. If they are, ask about other credentials they carry, such as certifications from manufacturers and even recognitions for the quality of their workmanship.

“Do You Have Insurance?”

Your roofing contractor should carry general liability insurance and worker’s compensation insurance. These are your protection in case someone gets hurt as a result of your roof, which the roofer is working on or has worked on.

“What Is Your Address?”

A reputable roofer should have a physical address that you can easily find. They should also have phone numbers. If they hesitate to give you their contact information, they’re probably hiding something. They might be working out of a truck instead of an office. Or they might be out-of-towners looking to make a quick buck before they move to another area.

As you’re speaking with a prospective contractor, observe how you feel about them. Do they sound genuinely interested, or do they make you uncomfortable? Are they quick to answer your questions, or do they always have to “get back to you?” Sometimes, your gut feeling will tell you if you’re talking to someone worth considering or somebody you’d rather just walk away from.
