Signs That Your Roof Has Been Damaged by Wind

Every asphalt shingle in your roofing system is designed to withstand various elements. However, when severe storms occur, there’s no guarantee that your roof will remain in perfect condition. Certain wind speeds can wreak havoc on your roofing.

To give you an idea, a wind speed of 45-57 mph can tear down tree branches and leaves and remove loose shingles; 58-74 mph can tear down or uproot trees and rip off shingles; 75-89 mph can flip mobile homes and cause severe roof damage to commercial buildings; and 90+ mph can cause significant roof damage to homes.

That said, you should always call a professional to check on possible damage to your roofing after a storm has passed. Below are some of the signs that indicate wind damage on a roof.

Loss of Granules

Wind can cause shingle granules to fall off. One of the places that you should check for significant granule residue are your gutters since this is where they usually pile up. If your roof has lost excessive amounts of granules, you should have this checked by a professional as your roof might already be compromised.

Roof Curling

The edges of roofing are prone to wind damage, so residential roofing experts pay special attention to these areas during a roof inspection. Curling shingles are a common result of strong winds because these are usually where the wind took hold. It’s important to have these shingles replaced so as to prevent water damage.

Missing Shingles

This is probably the easiest way to tell that your roof has been damaged by the wind. When there are entire shingles missing from your roof, you might want to check your yard or around your home for these shingles. Make sure to call a roofer ASAP to determine the extent of the damage.
