What Are the Signs of a Damaged Roof Deck?

There are several factors that can prematurely wear down your roofing shingles, including high winds, driving rain, heavy snow loads and ultraviolet (UV) rays. Located beneath your shingles, your roof decking can also be damaged as it’s also a structural component. Left unattended, a bit of damaged roof decking can lead to serious structural issues and expensive repairs. That’s why it’s best to see signs of roof decking damage early on to prevent bigger problems.

Here, we share the common signs of damaged roof decking and why you should replace it.

Signs of a Damaged Roof Deck

The roof decking on your house is located above the rafters. It’s typically made of oriented strand board (OSB) or plywood. You should be aware of your roof decking, which is located just beneath the felt underlayment beneath your shingles.

Keep an eye out for the following damage indicators:

  • Shingles that are buckled or damaged
  • Abrasion of shingles
  • Loose granules
  • Roofs or shingles with noticeable holes
  • A moldy attic
  • The smell of rot in the attic
  • Roof sagging
  • Problems with roof fixtures, such as vent pipes, chimneys, etc.

Common Issues Caused by a Damaged Roof Deck

If your shingles are damaged, it’s possible that your roof deck is damaged too. You should call your roofer and schedule an inspection and roof replacement as soon as possible. Ideally, you should replace your deck along with your shingles to ensure the durability and performance of your new roof.

Leaving your damaged roof deck unaddressed can lead to the following problems:

  • Water damage to your attic and walls
  • Higher utility bills
  • Mold growth
  • Premature shingle deterioration
  • Weak and rotted roof
  • Pest infestation

How Does Roof Decking Get Damaged?

Heavy snow loads can damage the roof decking, especially if the snow sits on the roof for an extended period. Damage can also occur where shingles have been damaged by high winds, UV deterioration or normal wear. Most roofs are designed to last about 20 years, though the actual lifespan varies depending on the materials, installation quality and local climate. Excessive humidity caused by insufficient attic ventilation can also lead to a damaged roof deck. A humid attic can cause warping of the roof decking over time, especially if the decking is relatively thin.
